1. Grierson's Raid 1863 Marker

Inscription. On April 23, 1863, Union cavalry led by Col. Benjamin F. Grierson approached Philadelphia from the north en route to Newton Station. Seeing armed citizens ahead blocking the road, which ran across this block, Col. Grierson ordered his men to encircle the town. Following a brief skirmish, the Federals entered and swore a group of citizens to a period of silence regarding the column's location. Grierson continued south toward Newton. The following day, a subsequent skirmish ensued with the 7th Illinois Cavalry.
