1. The First National Bank of Berryville Marker

Inscription. It is the former location of Hammerschmidt Lumber Co. and the First National Bank. It is now home of the Harrison flood of May 1961 mural (located inside) hand painted by Louis Fruend. This historic event commanded both national and international news coverage and completely demolished all of the structures near Crooked Creek and either destroyed or did significant damage to 80% of the buildings around the square. The Army Corps of Engineers labeled it a 100 year floor and estimated losses in excess of $5.4 million (in 1961 dollars). It was the worst catastrophe in the town's history and eventually led to the Lake Harrison recreation project.
