Inscription.  

Muiris Mac Gearailt a thóg 1176 : rinneadh méadh air ó am go ham ina dhiaidh sin. [?] dtús na 14ú aoise ba é príomháit chónaithe ghearaltach chill dara é, chuir "Tomás an Tsíoda" i dtreo cosanta in aghaidh na sasanach é i 1534.

This 13th century Keep, which replaced the castle erected by Mauríce Fitzgerald in 1176, was for many years the principal residence of the Kildare branch of the Geraldines, one of whom, "Silken" Thomas Fitzgerald, fortified it against the English in 1534. The castle was captured and dismantled by the Confederate Army in 1647.
