Gerberhaueser / Tanners Houses
Brückenstraße 8 and 10

(English translation:) The prosperity and influence possessed by the Zeilitzheimers tanners is displayed in this two-story Franconian-limestone
estate with its double gates. The massive impression made by the 31 meter long building is due to the raised basement and the wooden upper structure atop the drying area with its shutters, under a reinforced roof.
When opened, these provided the fresh air supply for those skins hanging to dry.
Two circumferential sandstone friezes separate the floors, and the sandstone arches with their cornerstones frame the wooden gates. In the middle part, the semicircular glass pieces represent the rising sun, with the boards arranged as a beam of rays.
The master tanners, Johann Athanasius Krönlein - 1846, and Fritz Krönlein - 1906, have their initials inscribed in stone.
The large courtyard with about 600 square meters is today divided by a wall, with its filled pits are still extant. These sandstone-lined pits were used for tanning the hides - with the addition of water and ground oak bark pieces the hides were tanned through the effects of heating. (Marker Number 3a.)
