1. Medicinal Garden Marker
Inscription.  This garden illustrates the historic and current use of herbs as medicine. Plants have played an integral part in illness and disease treatment for thousands of years. By observation, trial, and error, people learned which plants had healing properties, which did not, and which generated harmful side effects. Although many plant-based medicines are now synthesized, cultures throughout the world continue to use herbs for a wide variety of medicinal purposes, and research has confirmed the effectiveness of some of those uses.

The information provided is for educational purposes only. It should not be interpreted as endorsing self-diagnosis or treatment with herbs. Many plants are poisonous, and herbal remedies cannot be viewed as safe merely because they are plant-based.

The information on the labels was obtained from several sources available in 2000. The field of medicine is constantly changing in light of new research. Accordingly, these labels offer a snapshot of the value of plants in medicine, rather than a definitive treatment of this subject.
