Inscription. Nobel Laureate Dr. Edward A. Doisy (1893-1986) earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1920. He joined the Saint Louis University faculty in 1923 where he discovered estrogens only a few years later. In 1943, he received the Nobel Price in Physiology and Medicine for his groundbreaking work in the isolation and synthesis of vitamin K, a substance essential to blood clotting. As chairman of SLU's Department of Biochemistry from 1924 until his retirement in 1965, he led the unit to national prominence. A generous philanthropist, Dr. Doisy reassigned much of the income derived from his research to the Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
