The second county courthouse burns on December 6th. In 1872, construction begins on a third courthouse to replace it.
1880
M. P. Moller moves his organ factory from Greencastle, Pennsylvania to Hagerstown. The company manufactures over 11,000 instruments before closing in 1992.

Hagerstonian William Thomas Hamilton serves as the 38th Governor of Maryland.
1890
Bethel Street resident Corporal William O. Wilson, 9th U.S. Cavalry ("Buffalo Soldiers") earns the last Medal of Honor earned on American soil. He was cited for bravery fighting a Sioux war party at the Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota on December 30.
