Elson, born in Coshocton but relocated to Iowa, was serving in the 9th Iowa Infantry during the Battle of Vicksburg. During the grand assault of the Confederate defenses of the city on May 22, 1863, Elson carried the regimental colors in advance of the main body to encourage the other men.
