The Fishery at Murray Harbour
⎯⎯⎯
La Pêche À Murray Harbour
Inscription.
A well-protected fishing harbour lies a short distance down the South River from the end of the trail. Fishing boats are lined up on both sides of the waterway and storage sheds dominate the wharves. The quiet ripple-free water in the late afternoon or between fishery seasons belies active nature of the industry. The fishery has sustained the community since the area was first settled in the late 1700s. Fish were much more plentiful in those times and easily caught from small boats within sight of land. Small farms provided the means of rounding out the diet.
The mid-to-late 1800s brought processing plants and canneries, adding further dimensions to the industry. Coastal trade stretched to the West Indies, bringing additional activity to the port. Shipyards had been established before 1800 including one in the South River. The industry expanded or contracted to meet the challenges of the times. Species sought include finfish (mackerel, herring and tuna) and shellfish (clams, scallops, crab and lobster). Since the late 1800s, the lobster industry has been the mainstay of activity in the port.
With over 400 km of paths, Prince Edward Island's Confederation Trail is a wonderful way to explore our beautiful Island.
