Inscription. The Virginia State Normal School, now Virginia State University, purchased a two-acre tract with a mill building from John Stearns for the sum of $35,000 in 1922. The mill was used for silk dying and weaving and was one of many water powered mills located on the banks of the Appomattox River from the mid-1840s through the 1890s. This post card view of the mill was taken around 1912 and shows the former Virginia Hall in the background.
