Inscription. Construction began on the western end of this building in 1822. It front facade has since been altered due to lowering of the street level. This Federal style building has a distinctive history. After it was built by a carpenter, john Quarles, his descendents owned the property for almost a century, including, Andrew J. Andrews and widow, Anne Parkinson, listed as owners until 1890. Andrews continued on as owner for another decade and a half. Older residents recalled with relish how one of the descendants, when threatened with foreclosure sat on the doorstep with a shotgun daring anyone to bid at the sale. This house is listed as a contributing structure to the St. John's Church Historic District on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
