1. California Trail - Carlin Canyon Marker
Inscription. "We have to cross the river four times... on each side of you there is a perpendicular wall of vast rock... overhanging the road so one has a feeling very near bordering on fear as he passes under those precipices" -- Lewis Beers, Aug 3, 1852

Location. 40° 43.616′ N, 116° 0.545′ W. Marker is near Carlin, Nevada, in Elko County. It is on Chestnut Street, on the right when traveling east. The marker is near the Carlin Tunnel on I-80, but the route to the marker, while simple, is circuitous. Take I-80 Exit 282 to Chestnut Street which runs parallel to I-80 on the south side. Travel east on Chestnut Street toward the Carlin Tunnel for about 3.5 miles where Chestnut Street curves under I-80 and enters Carlin Canyon. Drive another 1.5 miles to the marker. Touch for map.
