The gun before you is a 6-inch pedestal-mounted deck gun. This gun could fire two types of rounds, a 105-lb. armor-piercing round and a 90 lb. high-explosive round.
The model 1903-A2 guns that were at Fort Miles would have been mounted on barbette carriages inside three-sided heavy metal shields to protect the gun crew against incoming enemy fire. These guns were manually loaded, rapid-fire weapons.
The 6-inch guns at Fort Miles were placed in Battery Hunter and Battery Herring.

This is a photo of one of the guns that was used here. Each gun's maximum firing range was more than 15 miles; it took a crew of 25 to operated and was used primarily as an anti-ship weapon. The gun you see in front of you is not the actual gun that was placed at Fort Miles, but represents 6-inch guns.
