Benton's Well and Slave Cabin
This seven-foot deep, hand-dug well and the slave cabin 115 yards south were once part of the 2,560-acre plantation of the Ann Gooch Benton family who moved here in 1801 from Hillsborough, N.C. The Benton home stood on the Natchez Road (now Old Hillsboro Road) slightly north of this cross-road.
In 1900, Will Martin's grist mill, granary, black-smith shop and general store stood at northwest corner of Old Hillsboro and Wilkins Branch Road. In 1916, R.H. Pigue built the present building across the road at the intersection of Old Hillsboro and Bailey Roads. In 1929, Herman Green relocated his grocery store there after a fire destroyed Martin's building where his store had been located.
