Destruction, death and desolation surrounded and invaded the city and its inhabitants during the Republican Siege. If the Emperor's army took few precautions to prepare for the siege, the population did even less.

the Emperor's family doctor, noted: "almost every day men, women and children are injured or killed by shells on the streets of the city ".

General Ramírez Arellano, a direct witness, indicated that, since May 10, "hunger had wreaked such havoc in the army and in the population that it became impossible, at the cost of such great sacrifices, to prolong the defense of the city.”
