Stuyvesant square in Manhattan in New York County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Stuyvesant Square Historic District
New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation
Stuyvesant Square formed part of Peter Stuyvesant’s “Bouwerie” or farm in the 17th century. Designed in 1836, it is a particularly handsome example of a 19th century city square planned to relieve the monotony of the gridiron plan of streets. The statue in the square represents Governor Stuyvesant; it was created by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum. St. George’s Church on Rutherford Place, completed in 1856, was attended by area residents, including financier J.P. Morgan. The Friends Meeting House and Seminary, also on Rutherford Place, built in 1860 by the religious society known as the Quakers, forms a plain Greek Revival contrast to the Romanesque Revival solidarity of the church. The side streets retain the atmosphere of the old brownstone New York neighborhood.
