1. Metasequoia glyptostroboides Marker
Inscription. This tree was first identified from a fossil found in Japan in 1941. That same year a living specimen was discovered in a remote part of China. Since its discovery, fossil evidence has shown that during a warm period called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum 50 million years ago, forests of Metasequoia were found as far north as Axel Heiberg Island in Canada, which is at about 80° North latitude.
