When Samuel Slater first came here, the village had everything he needed to succeed. Pawtucket Falls provided ample waterpower. That energy was already powering local machine shops. Those shops were run by skilled mechanics who could assist with Slater's new project.
Finally, the river meant easy shipping of goods to distant markets. To these factors, Slater added his knowledge of spinning mill design. This proved to be a perfect formula. It yielded the first water-powered cotton spinning mill in the United States. That mill helped to trigger the Industrial Revolution.
