Inscription. Born in Missouri, he journeyed west in an ox-cart over the old Truckee route, arriving is California in 1849. He was a genuine “forty-niner.” He came with his father on a prospecting trip to the San Gabriel Valley in 1853 and they decided to stay. He was known as “Uncle Jim” and was a life-long member of the Baptist Church.
