1. William Slack Marker
Inscription. Born in England, after a 7-year apprenticeship he became a molder. He immigrated to America in 1848 and first settled in Ohio. In 1850 he moved to Utah and built the first blast furnace in Salt Lake City. From 1852, when he relocated to the El Monte area, he moved in and out of the area several times, but lived most of his time in the area. He engaged in various enterprises from stock growing and farming to operating a butcher business. He was successful in his business dealings and owned several store buildings in El Monte.
