"'I believe that God allowed me to be Miss America because He has a purpose for my life....I want to challenge the children of America to be the best they can be.... With positive self-esteem, hard work, adream, willingness to work, and facing your humiliations, anything is possible...." Whitestone is to her hearing as the result of a high fever caused by a severe ear infection. she has said she does not view her deafness as an obstacle. "It's an opportunity for creative communications. It's the same as getting to go to the Winter Olympics and everyone speaks a different language. But they they do the dance showing and we all know when it's great. It's communication by another name.'"
