The soldiers atop the monument is reaching into his cartridge box for a bullet, while loading his weapon. the disks use the symbol of the First Corps. The crenelated upper step of the monument symbolize military strength.

June 6, 1864.
(Bottom Right):July 1, first engaged the enemy between the
McPherson House and Reynolds Grove.
Subsequently moved to this place and
engaged Davis' Brigade. Remained at the
railroad cut at Seminary Ridge until the
final retreat. Had a running fight
through Gettysburg to Culp's Hill. On the
evening of the 2nd and again on the morning
of the 3rd went to the support of Greene's
Brigade and was heavily engaged.

11. The Railroad Cut

The 14th Brooklyn (84th New York) advanced to the edge of the railroad cut, catching elements of Davis' Brigade in a "box." After fighting here, the regiment was posted on the north end of Seminary Ridge between the railroad bed and Chambersburg Pike, where the Quality Inn now stands.
