Inscription. In 1810 Lawson and Elizabeth Sandles Nunnelly settled in the area that became Vernon, just down the road from this garden. Their family farmed, operated a mining company, and ran a general store on the banks of the Piney River. In 1882 this community became known as Nunnelly. In 1924 the Nunnelly family donated the land for this school, which served the young people of the community until 1978 when it became the Nunnelly Community Center. Five generations of Nunnellys have given generously of their time and treasure to enrich the lives of the people who have dwelt with them near this garden. This stone gratefully acknowledges all of them - the Nunnellys and their neighbors.
