Inscription. Born in Laon, France, Father Jacques Marquette arrived in Canada as a Jesuit missionary in 1666. He spent six years living with Ottawa Native Americans before setting out on his exploration of the Mississippi River, including a journey up the Illinois River, founding Mount Jolliet in August, 1673.
