The Dutch started colonizing Staten Island during the early 1600’s. In the beginning it was difficult for the Dutch to survive because they were new to the environment. One major problem for the Dutch, and any new settlers, was farming, which was a necessity for survival. The Native Americans decided to help the struggling new settlers and taught them useful local skills including the Native American planting techniques. They taught the Dutch how to grow the Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters garden involves corn, beans, and squash and all working together. The corn is grown first and acts as a pole for the beans, which are planted second. The beans add key nutrients to the ground while the squash (which is grown third) with its big leaves, provide shade which helps keep weeds from growing. All Three Sisters play an important part in keeping the plants healthy. The Three Sisters Garden was very effective for the colonists. Without it, the colonists would have starved.

This Garden was created by Nicholas Urso from Troop 2, Immaculate Union Church, as his project to attain the rank of Eagle.
