American and Maltese Sailors of the Barbary War 1801 - 1805

In honored memory of the American and Maltese sailors of the 1st Mediterranean Squadron of the United States Navy and its flagship U.S.S. Constitution. Their intrepid service helped to increase freedom of commerce on the Mediterranean Sea during the First Barbary War of 1801 to 1805. Presented by the Naval Order of the United States 2019.

Location. 35° 53.683′ N, 14° 30.733′ E. Marker is in Valetta, Reġjun Xlokk (South Eastern Region). The marker is on the archway of the Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour. Touch for map. Touch for directions.
Regarding US Mediterranean Squadron and USS Constitution. The marker was established to honor the memory of American and Maltese sailors who served aboard the USS Constitution during the Barbary War. The National Capital Commandery of the Naval Order of the US led the project with support and funding from twenty-four (24) private donors. Diplomatic and US Navy representatives attended the dedication, as well as officials of the Maltese government.
