Poquoson, Virginia — The American South (Mid-Atlantic)
Tom Hunt Store
Odd, Va., a small town within the Poquoson district of York County was established on May 27, 1904. It is said to have gotten it's name from the Odd Fellow Hall of York Lodge No. 89 which the people from the postal service first occupied. A shingle was tacked up on the front of the building that simply read "Odd, Virginia". Thus the new town had a name and a post office was born. It was located where Poquoson Avenue intersected with the newly named Odd Road. Mrs. Sarah (Sadie) E. Hunt, was appointed as Odd's first Postmistress. The post office was located in her husband's store, The Tom Hunt Store. Thomas Hunt, played the role of postmaster for 29 years and many residents never realized he was only acting for Mrs. Hunt. In 2001, the Tom Hunt Store was donated to the Poquoson Museum by local residents, and the next year the museum inquired and received notification that the building was eligable to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. To meet requirements from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and with the help of grants from Virginia Department of Transportation, the Hunt Store was moved to its present location, on a main road intersecting with a side street.
Erected by Poquoson Museum.
