The Todd Farmhouse, a Queen Anne style home with four bedrooms, was built in 1898. When the New Deal helped to finance the African-American development of Aberdeen Gardens, the Todd Farm and others adjoining int made up Aberdeen's 440 acres, in what was then rural Elizabeth City County. Chickens, cows, and pigs raised by Aberdeeners blended with the landscape, and a strong working-class community grew community grew up almost immediately. Aberdeen was one of the New Deal's great successes.
The largest family to apply for housing, Daisy and Wesley Johnson and their ten children, moved into the Todd Farmhouse. We can imagine the good times they and their neighbors had on the wide front porch. The Johnsons, like many Aberdeeners, operated a farm and sold produce locally. A familiar sight was the large windmill they built to bring water up from their well. In 1968, the Johnson children donated the windmill to Hampton's Bluebird Gap Farm. The farmhouse was demolished in 2007, and the land was sold for commercial use.
