1. Nolan Park Stabilization Marker
Inscription.
Nolan Park includes the Island’s oldest structures, including the Governors and Commanding Officers Houses, each individually listed in the Nation Register of Historic Places.

The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all the historic buildings on Governors Island, including these houses. Work on these buildings was addressed the most urgent problems with roofs, brick, and wood, with the goal of keeping water out of the buildings and protecting them from further deterioration.

In 2008, additional work was completed on the 14 yellow Victorian era houses. Though these houses have undergone a number of alterations over the years, they look very much as they did when they were built between 1857-1902. Work here focused on saving the historic wood siding, repairing copper porch roofs and adding a fresh coat of paint to protect these charming housed from the elements.

All the work on the historic buildings is reviewed by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and the State Historic preservation office to ensure compliance with the guidelines set for the National Historic District.
