Carriage House
circa 1900
The carriage house originally stored horse-drawn carriages and related equipment. Carriage houses were generally smaller than barns with large doors and few, if any, windows.
The carriage house at Mt. Pleasant would have stood close to the house like a present-day garage.
The cupola on top is both decorative and functional, allowing for ventilation. In the heat of summer, it allows hot air to exit the building at the highest point while drawing cooler air in from below.
A carriage is a four-wheeled horse-drawn passenger vehicle.
