Inscription.
This stone is raised as a tribute of love and loyalty to his old comrades in arms, by Pete Youree, Capt. Commanding, Co. I, Slaybacks Regiment, Joe Shelby's Brigade, Missouri Cavalry.

"We care not whence they came, dear is their lifeless clay. Whether unknown or known to fame, their cause and country still the same, they died-and wore the gray."

"A folded flag, a brilliant page unrolled, a deathless song of southern chivalry."

"Their glory shall never die; their epitaphs are written in the hearts of mankind; and wherever there is speech of noble deeds, their names shall be held in remembrance."

More about this monument. Full-length marble figure of a Civil War soldier. He wears a uniform and a broad-brimmed hat. His proper left hand is at his side and grips the blade of a sword directly below the hilt. In his proper right hand he cradles an upright flagpole and flag. The figure stands atop a tall shaft. On the front face of the shaft is a relief of crossed flags. The shaft rises from a triple-tiered granite base with rough-hewn steps.
