1. St. Charles Points of Interest Marker
Inscription.
Picturesque St. Charles hugs the banks of the Missouri River. The mixture of French, early American and German influences and careful restoration to make this a unique historical town.

Main Street of St. Charles was recognized as a historic district in 1970. The street includes the Chouteau Mill, Western House, Eckert's Tavern, where the Santa Fe Trail route was established, Stone Row, Odd Fellows Hall and the Market House.

2. First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site is located behind you. The site is owned by Missouri State Parks. Tours are available; call 636-940-3322.

4. Katy Caboose #139 in Frontier Park is painted in the green and yellow color scheme in the last days of the Katy Railroad.

11. The Academy of the Sacred Heart was established in 1818 by St. Philippine Duchesne. The founder's shrine is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. To arrange a guided tour, call 636-946-6127, ext. 1801.

Frenchtown Historic District retains some of the early flavor of St. Charles. The Frenchtown Heritage Museum on Second Street documents the history of Frenchtown. This photo was taken around 1909.

7. Lindenwood University was founded in 1827, and is one of the oldest colleges west of the Mississippi River.

14. The Market House is home to the St. Charles County Historical Society; call 636-946-9828.

17. Stone Row includes the first state jail, 1821-1826.

18. At Eckert's Tavern in 1827, surveyors approved the official route of the Santa Fe Trail.

19. The Western House, a popular inn for travelers on the Boone's Lick Road, was restored in the 1970s.

20. Chouteau Mill was identified as a good mill site by Louis Blanchette. IT later became the St. Charles Woolen Mill.
