Inscription.
Following the first siege, soldiers were allowed to supplement their daily ration by fishing in the river, foraging in the surrounding forest, and even gardening.

General Owens June 15th, 1813
"At Seven o'clock every morning four men from each Company will be permitted to pass the Centinels accompanied by a Commissioned officer to gather fruit and Sallad the men to goe out armed and return by 12 oclock."
