Deweese (Dewees) St. Neighborhood
Segregation limited the housing options of African Americans. Redlining and discriminatory real estate policies forced black Lexingtonians to live in "shotgun" houses built close together. By the late 19th century, this street was mainly an African American residential and business district.

African American Business District
Opened in December 1948, the Lyric Theater anchored this business and entertainment district for decades. The Derby Sandwich Shop, Domestic Life and Accident Insurance Co., Club Hurricane, and Sterling Barbershop were among the many African American businesses in the community.
Presented by the Urban League of Lexington-Fayette County
and the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
