Aquitania
Built by John Brown & Co., Clydebank, Glasgow. M.V. Liverpool-New York, 30 May 1914. The last four-funneled Atlantic liner, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful ships ever built. Commissioned as an armed merchant cruiser, August 1914, after only three voyages. Served as a hospital ship and troopship 1915-19, and again as a troopship, 1939-48; the only great liner to serve in both wars. Partially refitted to carry war brides and emigrants to Canada 1948-49. Withdrawn from service December 1949 after having steamed nearly 3,000,000 miles and carried an estimated 1,200,000 passengers.
