Herman L. Donovan. UK's Fourth President (1941-1956), Donovan guided the University through World War II and desegregation. He focused much of his energy on post-war planning for UK, which witnessed an influx of returning service men and women. Donovan pushed for the opening in 1955 of the northern Extension Center in Covington, the establishment of new academic programs, and made preliminary plans for the establishment of a Medical School. In retirement, Donovan published Keeping the University Free and Growing. Born in 1887 in Mason County, Kentucky, Donovan died on November 21, 1964.,
Donovan Hall. The $1,706,000 men's dormitory located on the Rose Street side of the University of Kentucky campus housed 357 students with dining facilities for 1,200. Named in honor of UK President Herman L. Donovan, the hall offered 176 twin bedrooms, one single room, one quadruple room, a twin guest room with private bath, and a 4-room apartment for the director. Each student had an individual bed, desk, chair, lamp, and built-in closet and chest. One telephone served 20 students, and each student had a separate number connected to a buzzer in their room. Each floor had coin-operated laundry facilities. When it opened in 1955, living expenses were $90 for the room and $165 per semester for two meals daily.
