UAEM Main Building
It is located in the historic center of Toluca de Lerdo. It occupies a beautiful neoclassical building dating from 1736, built to operate as home for the Recogimiento de Beatas del Carmelo, but it did not work as such, so two schools for girls were established: one for the mixed raced girls and one for the creole and penisular girls.

In 1828 this property became the seat of the Literary Institute, which was directed and supervised by Fray José de Jesús Villa Padierna and José María González Arratia. The professorships that were initially established were of natural law and people law, drawing, math, religion, French and grammar.

The study of teachings and religious practices stopped in 1867, giving priority to the study of social and legal sciences. In 1886 it changed its name into Literary and Scientific Institute of the State of Mexico. Finally, in 1956 the University of the State of Mexico was founded and the building is now the headquarters of the Dean of the University, the Museum of Natural History Manuel M. Villada, the Meteorological Observatory, the Lecture
