1. Phi Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Marker
Inscription. Phi Omega was established in 1924 as the first graduate chapter in North Carolina of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the nation's oldest African-American sorority. Members have built a legacy of "Service to All Mankind", including development of Ivy Arms Apartments to address a need unmet by private builders. Phi Omega members include the first African-American women elected to the local school board, the City Council, and the state Senate. Dr. Barbara K. Phillips, a Winston-Salem native, served as the sorority's 20th international president.
