Inscription. In the 1830s, a red-headed Irishman sold beer and ginger cakes on this site until some boys got him drunk and cut his hair, causing him to leave town. In 1850, E. R. Horton erected a storehouse here used by several dry goods merchants. After an 1884 fire destroyed the Horton building, R. C. Handly constructed this building, which was occupied by a wide variety of businesses until it was purchased in 1956 by Farmer's National Bank.
