We have before us the greatest task ever faced by any generation of men in the fight to preserve peace. Let us devote ourselves to a generous service to our fellow men just as these dead dedicated their lives to that service.

who served so gallantly in war, 1861-1865

This memorial is dedicated in tribute to their sacrifices one hundred years later.

1. Location of the Veterans' Memorial
Out of a quirk of Virginia's political geography, while the memorial is for veterans from Rockbridge County, the memorial is not in that county. Lexington, while the county seat, is a distinct entity as are all municipalities organized as cities in Virginia.
