1. Sugar Camp WAVES Cabin Marker
Inscription.
Sugar Camp WAVES Cabin. ca. 1943. In April, 1943 Col. Edward A. Deeds opened the residential cabins at Sugar Camp, built several years earlier as a summer school for sales personnel, to house the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) working in a joint top-secret World War II code-breaking project for the US Navy and NCR. Initially 300 women were housed in the sixty cabins and had access to a dining hall, four classrooms, a recreation building, administration building, outdoor swimming pool and baseball diamond. These women were hand-picked by the Navy to fill essential jobs in the manufacture and operation of critical code-breaking machines, especially the American "Bombe", which significantly hastened the end of the war.
