Once a common sight in rural America, the windmill was primarily used to pump water. The mechanical energy generated by the windmill was also used to run machines to chop cornstalks for fodder shell corn, or grind grain into flour. With the advent of rural electrification, electrical pumps rapidly replaced the windmill.
