Hartranft was brevetted major general for his role in the Battle of Fort Stedman, bringing his untested division from its reserve position and counterattacking to recover the captured fort. After the war, he was elected to two terms as governor of Pennsylvania. This monument is also reffered to as the Hartranft Monument.
