1. Amelia Earhart Drive Marker
Inscription. Amelia Earhart, first woman to fly across the Atlantic, received an Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree from Thiel College December 1932. Her father, Edwin S. Earhart, graduated from Thiel in 1886. Her grandfather, Reverend David Earhart, was one of the pastors who formed the Pittsburgh Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1845. In 1870 the Synod assumed oversight of Thiel College.

Before disappearing in 1937, Earhart met with Thiel College’s president. Because of her affection for the College and her desire to empower women, she had planned to work with and fundraise for groups that would create opportunities for women on campus.
