Inscription.  Following the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, Mecklenburg County became the state's largest cotton producer. With the coming of the railroads in the 1850's, Charlotte emerged as a transportation and business center. A textile boom revived the area's economy in the 1880's, and by 1904 approximately 300 cotton mills, possessing one-half of the looms and spindles of the South, were located within a 100-mile radius.
