DeBary in Volusia County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Working
DeBary Hall Historic Site
Big freezes in the 1890s ended serious orange growing here. Even then, a smaller workforce tended the remaining citrus trees, handling livestock, kept up the buildings and grounds, planted food plots for quail, and entertained hunters. African Americans from a nearby community labored for the deBarys well into the twentieth century. People in this neighborhood knew how to work.
