Inscription. The Reedville Railway. . The boat yard on Main Street in Reedville began operation in the late 1800s. In 1906, Samuel Obediah Butler, grandfather of the present owner, George M. Butler, bought the property with a partner. He became sole owner in 1920. There he and his son, George Pope Butler built boats until Samuel's death in 1933. George Pope Butler continued crafting fine wooden boats for watermen and others, closing the railway for several years during World War II to contribute his skills as a boatwright for the U.S. Coast Guard. He returned in 1946 and re-opened the railway, working with his son, George. the two established a bay-wide reputation as premier boat builders. George M. Butler has carried on, enhancing his exceptional shipwright tradition established by his father and grandfather. . This historical marker is in Reedville in Northumberland County Virginia
