1. Women's Club Marker
Inscription. The South San Francisco Women's Club was first formed as the Women's Improvement Club, April 12, 1905. Marianne Martin was elected president. The purpose of the Club was to help promote the education, moral and social well-being of the City. The women led a beautification campaign on Grand Avenue, planting flowers, trimming trees and purchasing garbage cans. The Club reorganized on October 2, 1914, as the South San Francisco Women's Club. Mrs. Martin was once again elected president. A plot of land was donated for a future clubhouse by the South San Francisco Land and Improvement Company's land agent, William J. Martin. In 1940, after years of fundraising, the clubhouse was built.
