1. On This Site - Over the Years Marker

Inscription. Before the state of New York took the land for a new expressway in the 1950's (just completed in the large photo), the park's property ran all the way to the water's edge of Irondequoit Bay. In the early days, picnic groves were located where the waterpark is today and south of the wave pool.

The groves featured big shade trees, an apple orchard, small sheds that housed retail items and a shooting gallery (inset), and even a train ride that went to the bluff's edge. A farm house sat where the wave pool is now.

The train ride has always been popular, shown here in the "postcard shot" (inset) and several newer photos. The old "Sleepy Hollow Railroad" was replaced by the current 24-guage train, and its route changed many times.
