1. Sally Port Marker
Inscription. Here, below the north main works, was the only entrance into Fort Negley. Known as the sally port, the passageway was protected by a wooden guardhouse. The structure also served as a "keep" (a reinforced position) in case the east outer works were overrun.

Marker can be reached from Fort Negley Boulevard north of Chestnut Street, on the right when traveling north. Marker is on the northwest side of the fort, just inside the sally port (entrance).
